STUDY ABROAD – SUMMER 2024
Natural Dyes – Art Education
Oaxaca, México.

During our two-week stay in Mexico, we spent most of our time at La Cupula, a B&B in Teotitlán del Valle, Mexico. It was run by master weaver Demetrio Bautista Lazo and his family, and it was absolutely gorgeous. Each of our meals was prepared by Demetrio’s wife and family and always included fresh produce and traditional cooking techniques.
One of the most influential experiences in my teaching journey was a summer art education program in Oaxaca, Mexico. For two weeks, I lived in Teotitlán del Valle and studied with master weaver Demetrio, learning traditional natural dye techniques from gathering raw materials to creating mordants and experimenting with the chemistry of color. We explored historic Indigenous sites, learned about local commerce and craft traditions, and experienced the rich cultural heritage of the region firsthand. The blend of art, science, and cultural learning continues to shape my teaching practice and has inspired many of my favorite lesson plans.
